This becomes even less convenient after you’ve finished the drink and before refilling it as the bottle then becomes a hollow cylinder that takes up space needlessly. What’s more, if you’ve finished your drink it’s relatively easy to forget about it and leave it behind, which doesn’t exactly help the cause.
The challenge
The challenge this month then is to come up with a reusable drinks bottle that is also easy to carry around. Your product could include revolutionary material innovations or some kind of inventive mechanical properties. Whatever you come up with it must be lightweight, reusable, easy to carry around when hiking, camping, travelling or spending time in the gym, and 100% recyclable.

The solution
Our solution to last month’s Coffee Time Challenge to create a re-usable water bottle to tackle the problem of single-use plastics comes from US startup Hydaway Bottle, that recently released the latest iteration of its collapsible drinks bottle, the HYDAWAY H2.0.
The HYDAWAY H2.0 is a lighter, slimmer version of the original bottle launched in 2015. It is a collapsible, non-toxic water bottle made from BPA-free plastic and holds either 500 or 850ml of water when fully expanded. Once you’ve finished your drink it simply collapses into a flat disc just an 3800mm high, so it can fit in your pocket.
The new design also features two different lids, as well as the original cap lid there’s now a spout option which is for hydrating on the go either while running or at the gym. The spout lid also includes a carbon filter to remove tastes and odours from public fill stations.
Every year more than one-trillion piece of single-use plastic enter the waste stream, a lot of which finds its way into the oceans turning into microparticles that then end up the food chain. Since 2015 Hydaway says its bottles have prevented over 1100 metric tons of plastic waste reaching our oceans, streets and landfills.
The Kickstarter campaign reached its $20,000 funding goal in 18 hours and has gone on to reach more than $180,000 to date.
