A prize warning

A most comprehensive hazard warning system for motorists earned 14 year old Patrick Burns the title of “Young Engineer for Britain” plus £2,500

which he will share with his school, Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School in Newry. He told us, “I got the idea when my dad got home from his night shift with the fire brigade”. It is powered by the cigarette lighter socket and has an LED illuminated arrow, “Which you point in the direction you want the traffic to go”, Burns explained. It also includes a high intensity LED lamp that is foldable and pointable so the user can see what they are doing and two audio alarms to warn of oncoming traffic. One is triggered by a photoelectric sensor that detects car headlights, and the other is set off by a vibration sensor in a separate warning triangle which is detached and placed down the road. Burns said that the total cost of all materials and components was £10.95. For more information: www.youngeng.org
