The overall message of the film, “A crude awakening, the oil crash”, which is to be officially released in the UK on November 9th, is that engineers as well as politicians really need to get a move on in their efforts to find viable alternative energy sources to oil, particularly for transportation.
Produced and directed by journalists, Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack, this very unsensationalist and factual account of the oil crunch makes it clear that world oil production has probably already peaked, while demand is increasing steadily, and if some good solutions are not found and adopted within about the next decade, economic disaster and global wars fought to gain control of diminishing resources could be the fate of forthcoming generations.
The film includes sobre interviews with industry experts and a lot of hard facts, and comes to the conclusion that while potential catastrophe looms, there is no need for it, provided sufficient engineering R&D is undertaken now, particularly as regards hydrogen and solar power, but wonders if our democratically elected governments are capable of doing all that needs to be done in time.
