Augmented reality system lets drivers see ‘through’ vehicles ahead
An augmented reality system which lets drivers see through large vehicles in front of them has been developed by a team from the University of Porto in Portugal.
Known as the See-Through System, the technology requires large vehicles such as buses and HGVs to be fitted with a forward facing camera on their windshield.
Cars, meanwhile, have a transparent LCD screen built into their windshield. When a driver gets stuck behind a bigger vehicle, software recognises the back of it and replaces it with a video feed from a webcam mounted on that lead vehicle.
The transmitted footage is displayed on the car's windshield in such a way that it lines up with the actual through-the-glass view of the back of the larger vehicle. The image has a delay of 200ms, however, so it shows an oncoming car to be 10m further away than it actually is.
