BAE Systems overcome radar wind turbine problems
Over 50% of UK wind farm developments are objected to on air traffic control or air defence grounds because of the interference turbine blades have on radar systems. According to the British Wind Energy Association, 4.7GW of renewable energy projects are now held up because of military or civil aviation concerns.
However, BAE Systems says it has found a solution that will release 500MW of renewable energy and see developers commit £1billion of investment.
Although no single strategy has been identified, by better positioning ground based radars and wind farms, using 'gap filling' additional radar, and some novel modifications to radar electronic systems, the company has said it will be able to open up some offshore areas for development.
The company said: "The development of a process where wide-scale planning issues can be addressed in a systemic fashion paves the way for quicker, more cost-effective assessment of wind farm applications."
