It uses Biotex Flax from Composites Evolution in its Urban One bamboo bicycle. Thomas Henry Williams, co-founder and design engineer, Guapa said the decision to use flax was: "an educated decision to find the best performing material for our application. The natural mechanical properties that the flax and the wood composite provides is, for our application, better than using a material such as carbon". He says the flexural stiffness from the fusing the two natural materials provided strength, flex and vibrational characteristics they were seeking.
European standard testing shows the bicycles to be as strong if not stronger than carbon, aluminium or steel frames. All have a frame weight of just 3.3 kg.
The Guapa 'Urban One' Bicycle will be on show at JEC Europe (10-12th March).
