BMW to invest £250million in UK mini factories
BMW is to invest a further £250million in its UK manufacturing facilities over the next three years, safeguarding thousands of jobs.
The money will be used to increase production of the company's Mini model at its factories in Oxford, Birmingham and Swindon. The company said up to 10 new models could also be created, with the potential for additional production capacity at Oxford.
The news comes on top of the £500million investment announced by BMW last June and means additional job security for the 5500 UK associates working in the UK Mini production network.
"A year ago we announced a further investment of £500m in our UK production network by 2014 and today we are announcing an additional £250m, taking us through to 2015," said BMW's Harald Krueger. "This brings our total investment in the UK since 2000 to £1.75billion. Over the last decade, Mini has been a unique global success and the BMW Group has even greater plans for the future development of the brand.
Kreuger said the investment showed BMW's commitment to Britain as a 'vital manufacturing base'. He maintained that it would help the company's international growth strategy for the Mini as it introduced new models to the market.
