BMW unveils first all-electric car
In an attempt to win over drivers worried about the limited range of electric vehicles, BMW has launched its first production ready, battery-powered car.
The BMW i3, which was unveiled this week, features a range-extending petrol motor which allows drivers to try out the car's electric capabilities, without having to rely entirely on battery power.
The electric motor powering the BMW i3 generates a maximum output of 125kW/170hp and peak torque of 250Nm.
Its instantaneous power flows to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. The motor sources its energy from lithium-ion storage cells integrated into the car's underfloor section.
According to BMW, the battery gives the car a range in everyday conditions of 130 to 160km when fully charged from a conventional domestic power socket, BMW i Wallbox or public charging station.
Carbon fibre reinforced plastic provides the weight reduction that effectively neutralises the heft of the car's battery pack. To make it happen, BMW teamed up with Boeing for expertise on carbon fibre manufacturing.
