Compact cycle pump scoops big prize
Julian Peck’s ‘Cyclaire’ pull-cord cycle pump – which featured in the March 2006 edition of Eureka – has just been been crowned winner of the Sky TV Vodafone “The Big Idea” competition
, scooping a £100,000 prize and free mobile communications for his first year in business.
The 150mm long pump achieves its goals by being placed on the ground with the user standing above it and pulling on a handle attached to a pull-cord system, which works a double acting piston through a crank. This arrangement allows users to get a really long stroke from a compact pump. It is small enough to fit into a pocket, bike bag or rucksack – and does not have to be left attached to the bike frame.
Peck says: “The Cyclaire bike pump is already available and is Innovation of the Year. We’ve just launched the Cyclaire Rapid – which is the fastest mini pump in the world – and the Cyclaire Inflator, which can fill an air bed in under a minute. We have a prototype called the Cypod, which we can develop with the prize money from The Big Idea.”
The Cyclaire Original is priced from £16.95. More information from Cyclaire
