Team member and final year engineering student Ashley Craig, said: "This years' car shows great progress from last year and our team has worked really hard to improve the design – this includes a lighter, stiffer chassis, a new pneumatic gear shifter and smaller wings due to regulation changes, developed using aerodynamic CFD software.
The School of Engineering and Technology also hosts a 'Driver in the Loop' motion simulator which gives students 'real' race car experience and exposure to leading-edge Formula 1 technology. The simulator has the ability to represent any model of car, by adjusting or implementing figures from advanced kinematics software. Students can use the race car simulator from their first year to help improve their designs and knowledge of race car handling.
UH Racing has been competing in the IMechE educational motorsport, Formula Student, since the inaugural competition in 1998. The next Formula Student event will be held at Silverstone from 9 to 12 July, with over 3000 students from around the world taking part. In August the team will go to Hockenheim to take part in Formula Student Germany.
