Energy-efficient refrigerators are one potential future use of linear motion technology.
Dr Jiabin Wang, senior lecturer in the electrical machines and drives research group at the University of Sheffield, told delegates at yesterday’s ‘Linear Motion Masterclass’ that a redesigned compressor system could deliver substantial energy savings.
“Refrigerators account for 14% of all electricity consumption in the UK,” he said. “By improving the efficiency of the compressor you could save energy.”
Dr Wang said that a reciprocating system – whose mechanical resonant frequency is designed to coincide with the electrical supply frequency of 50Hz – could be up to 95% efficient. He added that a typical compressor would be around 60% efficient, due to losses in the induction motor and the crank and piston.
The work is currently at the research stage.
The Linear Motion Masterclass was the first in a series of Design Days organised by Eureka. The events combine technical presentations with hands-on workshops.
