Fuel cell crosses Atlantic on sailing yacht

One of the 225 yachts taking part in this year’s Atlantic Rally for Cruisers has on board a fuel cell, that can be powered by either LPG or propane

. The Voller fuel cell on the 41 foot, Beneteau 411 Class yacht, “Emerald” has the same equivalent performance as a 5kVA generator without any of the accompanying noise, vibration or smell. The fuel cell is used to keep boat batteries charged that may be used to power navigation and communication systems, fridges, washing machines, electric kettles or games consoles. As by-products, the cells produce hot water and space heating and can even be used to power air conditioning systems. The yachts left Las Palmas, Gran Canaria on November 25th 2007 and are expected to arrive in Rodney Bay, St Lucia, on or about December 18th.
