Manufacturing of implants to expand in Sheffield
Cricketer Darren Gough is to officially open a new £6 million orthopaedic implant manufacturing facility for JRI in Sheffield on September 14th 2007.
Joint Replacement Instrumentation Ltd (JRI) was founded in 1969 by Mr Ronald Furlong,
FRCS and commenced manufacturing in Sheffield in 1977. Unlike traditional hip implants, the Furlong HAC Total Hip Replacement is coated with hydroxyapatite, a material which forms a natural bond with the bone – significantly extending the life span and effectiveness of the implant.
Following the death of Ronal Furlong in 2002 and that of his widow Eileen in 2003, their estate, including 100% ownership of JRI, was bequeathed to The Furlong Research Foundation, a registered charity which they founded in 1989 with the express purpose of supporting education and research in the field of Orthopaedics.
A significant proportion of the profits of JRI are gift aided to the Foundation which in turn supports educational and research projects in the orthopaedic community
