Melting ice shoes make summer skating
Brit Leissler, who recently graduated from London’s Royal College of Art, has come up with idea of moulding ice skate soles for shoes, which will allow skating in summer, and also offers a very good way of easing the movement of heavy objects.
Brit told us that, “My brief was to create a self destructing object. I liked the idea of being able to skate in the park in the summer, so I came up with the idea of filling moulds with water and putting them in the freezer to form the soles of shoes.”
They last for about 40 minutes, and since melting ice is about one of the lowest friction materials there is, give a very slippery ride. Brit says that, “They can be used for skating on all sorts of smooth surfaces, so they actually work as a kind of multi-environment leisure enhancer, adding a dash of colourful guerrilla play power to even the greyest urban environment. Knowing that the experience is only lasting for a short while, as the ice melts, while slipping and sliding, the value of the moment is enhanced. However, these soles on ice can be re-created simply by putting them back in the freezer to be born again”.
