New process cuts weight of fuel tanks by 25%
An innovative new manufacturing process said to reduce the weight of fuel tanks by 25% has helped GKN Aerospace secure a five year, £2million contract with the UK Ministry of Defence.
The company's Mark 5 Air Portable Fuel Containers (APFCs) were selected by the MoD to transport fuel to inaccessible points such as forward airstrips, helicopter landing zones and forward operational areas. GKN claims they offer 25% weight savings and 30% cost savings compared to previous models.
The new manufacturing process, according to GKN's ceo Phil Swash, involves spraying a polyurethane compound paint onto nylon wire. The method, which replaces the slow and solvent-heavy rubber-based production, is said to be fast, cheap and environmentally friendly.
"In modern operations, the availability of fuel to vital forward activities extends the period of operation of helicopters, aircraft and ground units. It also ensures there is power, heat and communications for military personnel in the field. Our new containers will extend the distance it is possible to transport fuel to reach these points, at a reduced cost to our customer."
