Radiation shield material slashes weight and cost
A new radiation shielding material invented by Dr Hossein Saidpour, a principle lecturer and reader at the University of East London, is said by him to be “A fraction of the density and a fraction of the cost of lead”.
While its exact nature cannot yet be revealed, Dr Saidpour describes it as, “A combination of some natural materials and minerals, which cannot work individually. The idea came to me while watching a nature programme on television. I then made some up and took it to a laboratory to test. It screens against X-Rays, gamma rays, and electromagnetic radiation at mobile phone frequencies.”
Dr Saidpour is, “Looking for partners and companies” with whom he can develop the new material to commercialisation. His principle field of research is advanced materials, particularly polymer based composites.
