Semta calls on employers to shape the future of industry standards

A major review of National Occupational Standards (NOS) is being undertaken to ensure qualifications and training meet the needs of industry.

Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies is leading the UK wide review to ensure that current standards are fit for purpose and to find out from employers and stakeholders what changes might be required. "We have a philosophy of continuous improvement and it is very important to hear from those on the frontline as to the relevance of NOS," said Bill Twigg, Semta's apprenticeship director. "Our sector is recognised as playing a key role in driving economic recovery. We need to deliver standards, academic and vocational qualifications which help us to maximise potential and provide business with the people and tools to compete on the global stage." The standards being reviewed are: materials and process finishing, electrical and electronic engineering, engineering leadership and metals processing and allied operations.
