Spiber Showcases New Protein Fibre Fabrics

Japan-based developer of microbially-fermented Brewed Protein materials, Spiber, plans to showcase over 100 new fabrics at Milano Unica.

Spiber Showcases New Protein Fibre Fabrics

The company will show over 20 newly developed woven suiting fabrics created with Japan-based fibre distributor Takisada-Nagoya.

The collection contains a wide range of blends with 10%-50% Brewed Protein fibre with materials such as wool and polyester being used.

New Developments in Brewed Protein Fabrics

Spiber will also show 40 newly developed Brewed Protein blended fabrics, ranging from 6%-100%.

These fabrics were crafted in partnership with A-girls, a Japanese textile manufacturer, known for its expertise in circular-knit production.

Brewed Protein uses spider silk proteins, which are processed into a variety of two- and three-dimensional formats that contain functional properties ideal for cell culturing.

The company also uses fermentation of plant-based ingredients to make its materials.

The process creates a protein polymer that can be used to make various materials for clothing.

Spiber at Milano Unica

Visitors can explore the full range of Spiber's showcased textiles at Booth JOB A12 at Milano Unica on February 4-6, 2025.

Tomohiro Yamashita, A-GIRL'S President, said: "Brewed Protein fibre can be compared to a new seasoning in cooking—one that has the potential to transform the dish itself. It is a ground breaking material that stimulates the creativity of developers, offering the possibility of realizing projects beyond our imagination.

Sustainability and Innovation in Textiles

“Additionally, there is great joy in developing fabrics that are closer to human skin than any material previously available. As a manufacturing company, aiming to eliminate waste and reduce the burden on natural resources and animals aligns perfectly with our philosophy.

“The unique creativity and cutting-edge development technology that Spiber possesses are indispensable for the future. We have high expectations for Spiber to drive technological innovation not only in the textile field but also in new areas such as medicine and food."
