Transport propelled by permanent magnets
A company spun out of a Spanish University has come up with a linear transport system that is propelled only by changing the relative orientations of permanent magnets.
The enterprise, named Novateq Guerrero SNL, originated in Almeria University in Southern Spain. The magnets are neodymium iron boron with a nickel covering and the driving force of the system is based on a combination of attraction and repulsion of permanent magnetic fields generated by magnets. These are then modified with steel alloys, which, say researchers, makes it possible to direct the force at will.
The project is said to be at prototype stage and is intended for use in moving pedestrian walkways, distributing letters in sorting offices and in propelling assembly and product handling lines.
As permanent magnets are used, the system requires only mechanical maintenance and lubrication.
