UK to benefit from national 3D printing hub

The UK government has bet big on the idea that 3D printing will transform the country's aerospace industry.

Chancellor George Osborne will outline plans today for a £15.3million national 3D printing centre, which will support the development of new products for jet engines. The facility, which is due to open in 2015, will also support the automotive and medical industries, although it is expected to focus on aerospace primarily. The centre will be located next to the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry. The government has separately committed £15m to a new aerospace facility at the MTC that will help companies develop materials for use in aircraft fuselages and wings. Clive Hickman, the centre's chief executive, told the BBC: "It's been bubbling for the last five or so years. Now it's become important for the industry and for the future. "This investment is going to help us maintain our lead and will translate into jobs."
