The team claims that its telescopic design means the A-Bike can be folded out ready to ride in less than 10s. Made using aircraft grade aluminium and high-strength glass-reinforced polymers the bike is lightweight and durable. Its wheels are 13cm in diameter, but the bike features an enclosed dual-chain system that allows normal pedalling action.
Powered by a 24V li-ion battery, that can be removed to be recharged, the electric motor is claimed to have a range of 15 miles. The motor, housed in the front wheel, is connected to sensors which detect when you're slowing down, on a hill for example, and automatically provide more power assistance. This function can be turned on or off depending on whether the power assist is required.
Because of the sensor technology turning the motor on and off, the A-Bike Electric is classed as a pedelec, meaning there's no need for registration, insurance or a licence.
The A-Bike Electric Team is hoping to raise £40,000 so that they can go into full-production.
