Young engineers challenged to shape the future

On the principle that engineering should not just be about work but also about designing to help people have fun, the 2007 BAA Airport Adventure Zone Challenge, organised by Young Engineers, was to design an adventure zone for the airport terminal of the future

. Winners of the national final in the 12 to 18 category, which took place at Gatwick Airport on April 27th 2007 were Kelly Bidwell (14), Michaela Gregory (14), Jayland Cubitt (13), Carolanne Volp (14) and team leader, teacher Alan Day from Selsdon High School, Croydon. Their scheme included a mock hot-air balloon lift to take visitors up to the first floor and tube slides for them to come down again. There was also to be a telescopic bridge between the two sides of the first floor, providing an aerial view of the activities below, including a floating sea plane providing rides along a section of the river. A simulator would take passengers through locust storms, rain, snow storms and turbulence. Chloe Hopkins (10), Charles Granger (11). Matthew Anslow (11) and Abigail Sanderson (10) on the other hand (shown in our picture) from Uplands Junior School, Wolverhampton, had a project based on a fantasy zone featuring a dragon’s den and cloudland, and an aviation zone featuring a flight design room to design your own flying machine and a fun facts room. There was also to be a fun space room with a slide built round the planet Saturn. For more information: http://www.youngeng.org
