There are a number of biobased resins which are now finding use in composites manufacture, these include wholly biobased resins such as polylactic acid, polyhydroxybutyrate and polyfurfuryl alcohol, as well as partially biobased resins such as biobased polyester and biobased epoxy. In addition, developments in biotechnology are producing new synthesis routes for traditional chemicals enabling the production of traditional resins using plant based feedstocks. These offer the prospect of cheap 100% biobased materials which perform as well as traditional materials without the need for changes to existing composite manufacturing process.
However, there are still some questions to be answered regarding cost, performance and supply. This forum aims to address some of these challenges and move the industry forward.
This event will bring together researchers, material suppliers and end users, encouraging discussion as to what additional development and support is needed to further the application of bioresins.
