Twenty years ago, our mission was to bring affordable CAD to the UK. Back in 1996, engineers and designers’ were looking for a new way forward. The launch of Windows was shaking up the industry, people were moving away from servers to PCs and a new generation of CAD systems was beginning to evolve.
When start-up SOLIDWORKS launched its first release in Chicago combining 3D solid modelling with the ease-of-use of a desktop, across the pond we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. Two engineers Bob Clements and Richard Cave-Penny saw the potential and founded New Technology CADCAM with the sole aim of bringing accessible and affordable 3D CAD to the UK.
Now in 2016, our customer base has grown with more than 2,600 UK customers. There are more than 3 million users of SOLIDWORKS worldwide and the SOLIDWORKS portfolio of products has grown exponentially to include a toolbox of goodies for even the most disconcerting engineer. Now, not only can you sketch, create, simulate, render, cost, publish and manage data, but there are industry specific applications for sheet metal, piping, electrical, plastics and sustainability that are all integrated so our customers can design products better, faster and more cost-effectively.
