Adjustable diffuse sensor is small and smart
Increasing complexity, higher levels of integration and ongoing miniaturisation of many devices also demand smaller and more complex automated manufacturing systems or assembly robots.
The fibre optic solutions or mini-sensors used to date are often incapable of performing the required tasks, or at least not to the user's full satisfaction. For example, an interfering background cannot be adequately suppressed.
Baumer Electric has developed a range of adjustable diffuse sensors with background suppression. Despite its small size, the 'Minos' sensor's sensitivity or sensing range can be adjusted on all standard sensors. They are equipped with an algorithm which suppresses reciprocal optical influences, a significant advantage that permits high sensor density where limited space is available.
For example, regardless of the target's colour, the sensing distance between the object and the background can be precisely adjusted. A microcontroller adjusts the transition from background to sensing area pixel by pixel. The sensing range can be adjusted from 10mm to 60mm, with a maximum resolution in the area of less than 0.3mm.
The cable position can also be a problem for users, especially if space is at a premium. Minos has two housing variants, 'cable on rear' and 'cable underneath' and the sensor can be mounted using a readily available M3 screw. The 'Minofix' sensor holder with its ingenious, integrated cable pass-through is also available for fast, easy mounting. DP
