Armoured protection guards flanges
These days it seems that anything saying ‘Do not touch’ is actually perceived as an invitation to do exactly the opposite, no matter how dangerous the article may appear to be.
Problem: Strongly worded posters certainly look pretty but do they really do the job? Personal safety, sabotage, vandalism, nuclear meltdown and pollution are all good reasons to put posters up but they might just act as an invitation to those stupid enough to be curious or those with ulterior motives.
In the world of petrochemicals there are plenty of objects which should not be tampered with, especially when one considers some of the materials being transported through pipework could relieve you of your skin with a single drop.
Solution: Armour protection works for main battle tanks so why not use it for pipework?
Going into the realms of Chobham anti-ballistic armour is not quite the case but highly visible armour can do just as good a job. With this in mind Castell Iso-Lok has introduced a versatile armour system to protect pipe flanges from unwanted or, indeed, unnecessary tampering. Being bright yellow in colour and secured with a big padlock it should get the message across.
The armour is supplied in sections so it can be built up to envelope all flange sizes from DN50 upwards. All the engineer has to do is build in the appropriate number of sections and finish off the armour with a connecting link which incorporates a padlocking facility. Links are also available for different widths for larger flange sizes
Application: With health and safety high on the agenda of most companies, this type of ‘preventative protection’ should find applications across a great many industries.
However, pipe protection does not just fall into the realm of petrochemicals; any industry that uses flanged joints, in permanent or temporary fixtures, will find this approach of use. Its flexibility ensures that it will match most large applications and there is no reason why it could not be scaled for smaller installations where it would be just as effective. MF
