‘Oar-some’ Contrinex DNV-approved inductives enhance maritime automation

The challenging and demanding world of Marine operations values reliability and durability, making it an important market for Contrinex sensors.

Maritime boat with enhances sensor solutions

For over two decades, Contrinex has provided cutting-edge sensor technology that has stood the test of time in ships, ports, offshore and shoreside applications. Part of this offer is their ‘Maritime’ range of embeddable inductive sensors, which are certified by DNV and provide unparalleled performance.

DNV-Approved Excellence:

Contrinex's ‘Maritime’ range of inductive sensors are approved to the DNVGL-CG-0339 environmental test specification for equipment to be installed on ships and offshore installations. The certification can be seen as a strong endorsement of the sensors' reliability and adherence to the rigorous standards set by DNV. The sensors are meticulously designed to meet the demanding requirements of the maritime industry, providing a level of performance that surpasses expectations.

DNV is an internationally accredited certification body that establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ships and other offshore mobile structures in international waters. 130 maritime administrations have authorised DNV to perform certification or verification on their behalf.

Uniquely Robust Full-INOX Technology:

At the heart of Contrinex's maritime sensors is its uniquely robust ‘700 Series’ / ‘Full Inox technology. This innovative family of sensors features a one-piece V4A/AISI 316L stainless steel housing. The sensors resist impact, abrasion, and vibrations and so excel in the harsh marine environment. The enclosure is rated IP68/IP69K, making them corrosion-proof and saltwater resistant. This robust construction ensures longevity and reliability, even in the most challenging maritime conditions.

EMC Protection for Maritime Excellence:

Contrinex understands the unique challenges posed by the maritime environment, especially concerning electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). The Maritime sensors are engineered with EMC protection that meets specific maritime requirements, including resistance to power supply variations and low-frequency immunity. This ensures consistent and reliable performance, contributing to the safety and efficiency of maritime operations.

Versatility and Performance:

Contrinex's Maritime range offers a choice of sensor sizes and shapes (M12, C23, M18, or M30) of their uniquely robust ‘700 Series’ with varying sensing distances (6, 7, 10, or 20 mm). The sensor’s wide temperature operating range of -25°C to +70°C helps cover a wide variety of applications.

The PNP versions also feature an IO-Link interface, facilitating simple, low-cost, seamless point-to-point communication with the system controller. The IO-Link communication protocol enables parameters to be auto-updated from the PLC to a replacement sensor when installed. IO-Link is also ideal for implementing the sensors into Industrial IoT (IIoT) and Industry 4 systems, such as continuous sensor status monitoring.

High-Pressure Rated Inductives:

In addition to the sensors described, Contrinex also offers a ‘P12G’ high-pressure rated sensor capable of operating in installations of up to 500 bar (7,255 psi) and at a peak pressure of 800 bar (11,603 psi). An example application is embedding the sensor into the side of hydraulic cylinders to verify that the cylinder stroke has reached a specific point.

DNV-Approved M10 Inductive Sensors:

Contrinex also offers DNV-approved M10 sensors featuring their ‘Classic’ technology. These sensors provide a reliable option for specific applications where the M10 size is preferred, ensuring that Contrinex has a solution for every maritime need.

Beyond DNV Certification:

While the DNV-approved Maritime range stands out for its excellence, Contrinex also recommends other sensor ranges for maritime use. Their ‘Extreme’, ‘Washdown’, ‘Analog Output’, and ‘Basic’ C44 sensors, all provide excellent performance and reliability for marine applications. They are used extensively for their flexibility, affordability and performance to excel in a demanding maritime environment.
