Calling retired engineers to the sun
In the course of giving a series of seminars on alternative energy in Pakistan, we found that there is quite a demand for retired engineers from Western countries to come and give help and advice both in industry and in institutions of higher education
.
In particular, we were asked by Qazi Javed Ahmed, the vice chancellor of Air University in Islamabad to see if we could arouse some interest in engineers in the UK who might be interested in teaching there. Although Air University has trained a number of Pakistan Air Force officers down the years, it was set up, and continues to remain a chartered university in the public sector open to all and sundry, and 90 per cent of its students seek careers in civilian industry. In the course of our visit to Pakistan, we encountered a number of semi retired engineers from Germany and the Ukraine in different institutions, and while these gentlemen were not being very highly paid, we found they were enjoying both a very comfortable standard of living and the satisfaction gained from the fact that while put out to grass in their own countries, they were able to draw on their experience to really make a difference in Pakistan.
