The Synchrochain Carbon is said to transmit high powers reliably, be wear-resistant and abrasion-proof. The heart of the belt is the carbon tensile member, which stretches less than an aramid tensile member at the same load. In addition, the high stiffness of the cord minimises pre-tension losses and the efficiency of the drive is further enhanced. This means the belt is virtually maintenance-free, which helps to keep costs down in maintenance and replacement.
Griffon Hoverwork has equipped the drives of their hovercrafts with timing belts for quite some time. However, the cooperation with ContiTech, the use of the Synchrochain Carbon endless timing belts which exceed the five-metre mark, is new. "ContiTech is the only manufacturer who can craft timing belts in the required lengths." Barrie Oldham, industrial sales director ContiTech UK, said.
The hovercraft will connect the city of Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight and are due to start operation in 2016. |
