Future engineers inspired in South East
The Lab in a Lorry team that is inspiring a new generation of young people to pursue careers in Engineering and Physics has teamed up with QinetiQ to undertake a tour of the South East of England this month
.
When we encountered it today in Chatham, Kent, we saw Jack Brydges and Ben Handley aged 13 from Greenacre School being fascinated by the intricacies of designing ballistic protection armour under the direction of QinetiQ’s Steve Fuller. The other two practical classes on the vehicle concerned resonance effects and more efficient oil extraction from deposits. The enthusiasm and the keenness of the students taking advantage of the facility was a pleasure to behold.
A joint venture between the Schlumberger Foundation and the Institute of Physics, the programme is constantly looking for new sponsoring partners and volunteers to man the lorries. Dr. Charles Jenkins, originator of Lab in a Lorry says, "Our programme's great asset is its volunteer base: people who are willing to share their time, enthusiasm, passion and knowledge of science with young people".
