Nissan unveils ‘self healing’ iPhone case

The innovative new device promises to repair itself from any scrapes by utilising Nissan's proprietary Scratch Shield paint technology. The polyrotaxane-based paint reacts to a change (i.e. being cut) and repairs its chemical structure to its original state, filling any gap. Nissan says that a small graze can heal within an hour, while deeper cuts could take up to a week to fix. The case itself is made from ABS plastic - a high grade, lightweight and robust substance widely used in the automotive industry. The plastic is overlaid with the scratch resistant paint to create a tactile, gel-like surface with a strong grip. "The Scratch Shield iPhone case is a great example of us taking a Nissan automotive technology that has had a huge impact for our customers, and then shifting the boundaries to apply it to another everyday product," said Nissan's Bob Laishley. "We're really excited about the possibilities provided by this technology." The Scratch Shield iPhone case is currently being licensed in Europe to mobile company NTT Docomo. The plan, says Laishley, is to bring more manufacturers on board over the coming year to begin licensing it on an international scale.
