Tata Steel to invest £2million in UK tube plant
Tata Steel is investing £2million in one of its UK plants to set up a supply base for the tubular sections used in offshore wind turbine foundations.
The Indian steel giant will produce the sections, also known as jacket foundations, at its Hartlepool site in the North East of England. The announcement marks the company's bid to ramp up its product and service offering to the offshore renewable energy sector.
Ramsay Ross, director for tubes at Tata Steel, said: "This investment reinforces our commitment to establishing a significant presence as a supplier to the renewables sector as the drive to transform the energy supply scene in the EU gathers pace."
Work on the new facility is due to begin this month, with completion anticipated for Spring 2012.
