The University of Edinburgh has received a £2M grant for research equipment for the new Institute for Energy Systems (IES) Lab.

University of Edinburgh Offshore Renewables Lab Receives £2M

The lab will help advance the development of sustainable energy technologies in offshore renewables.

The lab includes equipment that simulates real-world environmental conditions – with research focused on electrical machines and power electronics to produce renewable energy.

Funding from The Wolfson Foundation for Sustainable Research 

The grant was given by The Wolfson Foundation, an independent charity focusing on progressing research and education.

Professor Guangzhao Mao, Head of the School of Engineering, said: “We are very grateful for the Wolfson Foundation's generous support. The new equipment, to be installed in our newest engineering building, will fuel our pursuit of excellence in energy systems research and unlock new possibilities in sustainable energy technologies.”

IES Lab to Open in Spring 2026 

The University of Edinburgh lab is set to open in Spring 2026.
